WISBOROUGH GREEN VILLAGE
In the late 19th Century
Shaun wrote: "I enclose a picture of Wisborough Green in the late
19th-century, 1891, if I remember rightly. It was a thumbnail picture
being one of two of Wisborough Green, black and white, plastered with
copyright and some joker's credentials. I painstakingly erased the lettering
and put colour to the picture in order to negate copyright, if at all
that being possible. So, dear fellow, it you are going to use the picture
on your site, whack same in the conversation forum where it will be
safe from general view.
The picture is interesting as it would virtually be where Wisborough
Lodge now stands. I'll bet you down to my last Brass Razoo that the
lane way in the picture is now the Billingshurst Road. Anyhow, what
do you think? The individual in the photo appears to be a schoolboy
carrying his Port Manto off to school or, may be, returning from same.
I have not worked out the position of the sun shadows as to whether
it is am or pm. It appears that a culvert crosses the lane way a few
yards ahead and the farm building in the middle distance could just
possibly be the cottage or dwelling once owned by Mr and Mrs Churchman.
I wonder how far the church was from the school? We boys must have walked
to church on Sundays for no more than ten minutes or so."
